We have loved the many audio series from Adventures in Odyssey for as long as I can remember. Audio books are a great way to enjoy stories together, whether sitting at home or on the go in the car. Now that all 4 of my kids are reading on their own at a pace that fits them best, we try to enjoy more family read-alouds together where we can each take a stab at being the narrator! Thes past month, we got the opportunity to read-aloud the latest book in the Imagination Station series by Tyndale called, Islands and Enemies.
If I can choose between paperback or hardback for a book, I’ll choose hardback every time! And this book comes as a hardback with a bright and colorful cover and back. This 147-page book is easy to ready with large print and offers relevant pictures in black and white throughout the pages. We didn’t read every day, but from start to finish, we completed the book in less than 2 weeks!
A lot of homeschoolers choose to combine their history lessons with literature. This is a fantastic option for younger students, especially if your family also focuses on Christian historical fiction in your homeschool! This a great addition to any history studies of early explorers!
As with other books in the Imagination Station series, Islands and Enemies is historically accurate, telling of Captain-General Ferdinand Magellan and one of the ships in his fleet called the Victoria. As the main characters Patrick and Beth arrive in 1521 via the Imagination Station, they embark on an exciting adventure with Magellan and his crew.
What we love most about this book was everyone from our 2nd grader to our 8th grader can read it. It’s a story that any emerging reader can enjoy, and the older students didn’t mind reading it aloud to hear the story too. Our favorite time to read Islands and Enemies aloud was at bedtime, but in the picture above, Claire picked it up often to keep reading to herself.
Another great thing about this series is it often features inspiring Christians throughout history. In this case, we have Ferdinand Magellan and several of his crew members. It’s a book your kids will love to pick up, and one you’ll be happy they do!
Here’s a quick flip through of the book from front to back:
Our family loved reading Islands and Enemies together, aloud, and sharing the narrating job! But I found that even my 2nd grader and 4th grader could pick it up and read on their own. Overall, we enjoyed the story and the time together reading.
Happy reading!! Let us know what you think if you read it too!
