My oldest is starting high school. He has been a wiz at math, but as we began Algebra, we realized he may need some more time with pre-algebra concepts. So, we were thrilled with the opportunity to work through Mastering Essential Math Skills, Pre-Algebra Concepts from Math Essentials first this summer!
One of the many great things about homeschooling is being able to tailor curriculum to your children – make it work for you, not the other way around! And math is one of the subjects where none of my children on what would be considered their “grade level”. I have 2 still mastering facts and formulas before moving on, and 1 that is a level ahead where she “should” be.
For my incoming freshmen, we are using this pre-algebra workbook to master his math skills before moving on to Algebra. And the best part, he’s not stressed out about keeping up because he is right where he needs to be. 🙂

This is very much a self-paced course. You can watch the corresponding online video associated with each lesson, then complete the lesson on your own. Answers are conveniently located at the back of the book for easy grading. And the lessons are relatively short and to the point, with adequate review and even a word problem to round it all out! If you are unsure if your student is ready for Algebra, you may want to work through Mastering Essential Math Skills, Pre-Algebra Concepts from Math Essentials first. And don’t forget that it’s ok to spend more time on these concepts if your child is not ready to move ahead. That’s part of the freedom of homeschooling and the joy of learning!
